These modern artisans must master the use of traditional hand tools, such as the adze, a specialized axe used for shaping large timbers, and various hand planes. They learn to read the grain of different native woods, understanding which species can withstand tension, which resist moisture, and how they expand and contract with the changing seasons. By preserving these skills, the restoration project ensures that the community retains the capacity to maintain these structures for generations to come.
The restoration process is slow and meticulous. A single church restoration can take several years to complete, as carpenters hand-carve complex joints to match the original 200-year-old designs.
